Global navigation satellite systems performance analysis and augmentation strategies in aviation

Abstract: In an era of significant air traffic expansion characterised by a rising congestion of the radiofrequency spectrum and a widespread introduction of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are being exposed to a variety of threats including signal interferences, adverse propagation effects and challenging platform-satellite relative dynamics. Thus, there is a need to characterize GNSS signal degradations and assess the effects of interfering sources on the performance of avio… Show more

“…An optimised arrangement of transmitters ensures that the Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP), as shown in Equation (58), is kept within an acceptable threshold [ 41 , 42 , 43 ]. The optimised geometry also results in keeping the cost of the system down: where , , and are the variances of the estimation errors along each axis and , , , and are altitudes of the tetrahedron formed by joining unit vectors from four BS and one MS [ 44 ].…”

“…The use of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) is essential in a variety of fields that require precise location and time information, including aviation (e.g., Sabatini et al [1]), transportation (e.g, Kubo et al. [2]), search and rescue services (e.g, Molina et al [3]), agriculture (e.g., Kahveci et al [4]), and maritime operations (e.g., Ostolaza et al [5]).…”

“…SBAS and GBAS can provide users much higher position accuracy than GNSS, and have been widely applied. 4,5 As an important part of GBAS ground equipment, the VHF Data Broadcast (VDB) system is the key to GBAS augmentation navigation. 6 The VDB system broadcasts the differential correction information, integrity data, final approach segment (FAS) data, and ground station position information generated by the GBAS station to the airborne users in real time.…”
