Abstract:Background
Postoperative sore throat is a common, uncomfortable, stressful sequel of tracheal intubation that contributes to postoperative mortality and morbidity following general anesthesia. Therefore, reducing risks of post-operative sore throat is important to improve patient outcome.
Objectives
The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of postoperative sore throat among patients who und… Show more
“…Furthermore, POST has been found to have an association with duration of intubation and type of surgery as mentioned in a systemic review by Obsa MS et.al [32]. Even the use of nasogastric tube has been associated with this complication [33]. Surprisingly though, the following study did not show any significant association of post operative sore throat with the study variables as Pearson chi square gave us p-values greater than 0.05.…”

“…A Hospital based cross sectional study by Efrem Fenta and his co-authors declared female gender, larger sized endotracheal tubes and multiple attempts at intubation as elements to cause POST [31]. Furthermore, POST has been found to have an association with duration of intubation and type of surgery as mentioned in a systemic review by Obsa MS et.al [32]. Even the use of nasogastric tube has been associated with this complication [33].…”
Objective: To find out the incidence and frequency of post-Op sore throat in a tertiary care hospital. Study Design: Observational (cross sectional) Study. Setting: Department of Anesthesia Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. Duration of Study: This study was conducted from 1st November 2022 to 30th April 2023. Subjects and Methods: A total of 100 patients of both genders who underwent various types of surgical procedures under general anesthesia were admitted and followed in the post-operative period. After informed consent, patient selection was done through non probability consecutive sampling keeping inclusion and exclusion criteria in perspective and proformas were filled. Data was analyzed using Statistical software SPSS version 23.0 and results shown in the form of descriptive tables. Results: The total number of patients enrolled in the study were 104 out of which 44 were male and 60 were female with mean age of 41.1 ± 10.7. There was no significant association observed between sore throat and gender (p-value 0.630), age (p-value 0.367) size of ETT used (p-value 0.862) and duration of anesthesia (p-value 0.265). Conclusion: Post-operative sore throat is a regular occurring complication in patients however its incidence can be reduced by identifying the proper risk factors. Keywords: Anesthesia, intubation, Sore throat.

Airway management during general anesthesia can be done using a triple airway maneuver or the installation of devices such as a face mask, laryngeal mask airway (LMA), and endotracheal tube/ETT. There are various types of LMA, namely classic, proseal, supreme, and various other types. Throat pain is the most common intubation complication experienced by patients after anesthesia. The incidence of throat pain can be influenced by several things, one of which is the choice of type of LMA used. This study uses an experimental design and is a randomized controlled trial. In September and October of 2019, this study was carried out at the Arifin Achmad Hospital in the Province of Riau. Patients who received LMA intubation along with general anesthesia in September and October 2019 at Arifin Ahmad Hospital comprised the research population. The findings indicated that throat pain was more common in 14 individuals (17.5%) treated with LMA Classic than in 12 patients (15%) treated with LMA Proseal. The age groups 46-55 and 55-65 have the highest incidence of throat pain, which is also more common in women, patients with a history of smoking, and patients who have been intubated for longer than an hour.
“…Postoperative sore throat (POST) syndrome is commonly observed after tracheal intubation, with an incidence rate of 14.5 -50% (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). Its incidence after tracheal intubation varies from 6.6 to 90% (6). POST is the second most prevalent complaint following anesthesia, i.e., secondary to nausea/vomiting (4,5).…”

Background: Postoperative sore throat (POST) syndrome commonly occurs after general anesthesia and surgery, leading to patient discomfort. Objectives: This essay aims to assess the effect of using zinc-impregnated packs on sore throat and post-op nausea and vomiting after general anesthesia among patients undergoing septorhinoplasty. Methods: The sampling method was based on the patients’ gradual referral, and encompassing was performed using the randomized block. The participants were divided into four groups by random allocation technique considering the type of pharyngeal packs: (1) Normal saline-impregnated vibril, (2) Normal saline-impregnated gauze, (3) Zinc solution-impregnated vibril, (4) Zinc solution-impregnated gauze. The sample size required to compare the incidence of sore throat after septorhinoplasty was determined to be 220 patients. Results: Out of 220 patients undergoing septorhinoplasty, 55 were assigned to each group. According to A.S.A., most of the patients belonged to class I. In total, 5.5% and 15.1% had a history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and smoking, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among the four groups in terms of the sore throat immediately (P = 0.227), two h (P = 0.527), four h (P = 0.505), six h (P = 0.564) and 24 h (P = 0.481) after surgery. Results of pairwise comparison revealed no statistical difference between the groups receiving zinc and other groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the four groups in terms of the severity of sore throat. A statistically significant difference was observed between the gauze + zinc and gauze + normal saline groups regarding the incidence of nausea two hours after surgery (P = 0.0045). Conclusions: This study showed that applying topical zinc to the pack had no significant effect on reducing sore throat. However, there was a significant difference between the groups receiving zinc solution-impregnated gauze and normal saline-impregnated gauze in terms of the severity of nausea two h after surgery.
