Global impact of COVID-19 on stroke care

Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to profound changes in the organization of health care systems worldwide. Aims: We sought to measure the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes for mechanical thrombectomy (MT), stroke, and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) hospitalizations over a 3-month period at the height of the pandemic (March 1 to May 31, 2020) compared with two control 3-month periods (immediately preceding and one year prior). Methods: Retrospective, observational, international study,… Show more

“…49 Previously reported data by Siegler et al revealed that the incidence of arterial ischemic stroke in COVID-19 patients was 1% (156 / 14,483) but may range up to 1.5%. 32,50 The incidence of CVST in this same population, however, was observed to be a much lower 0.02% (3 / 14,483). Though this value may seem low, it is 30 to 60 times greater than rates of CVST reported in non-COVID 19 populations -3 to 4 cases per 1 million adults (0.0003À0.0004%) and 7 cases per 1 million children (0.0007%).…”

“…Decreases in ischaemic stroke admission, rates of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) [4][5][6] and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) volume 7 were reported in several regions in Europe, 8 9 Germany, 10 China, 11 Brazil 12 and the USA, 13 14 with steeper declines in stroke hospitalisations seen in areas with higher COVID-19 hospitalisation volume. 15 However, there is a paucity of information on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on SAH admissions.…”

“…Our hospital was designated to manage patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from the end of January 2020. Though there were only 13 COVID-19 cases reported in our district in 2020, The COVID-19 outbreak had impacted stroke care in several dimensions, including a global decline in stroke and cerebrovascular admissions 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 .
