Purpose The purpose of this study was to survey and describe key curricular and extracurricular components of U.S. dental schools’ global health programs. Methods A 22‐item web‐based survey invitation was sent to administrators at all 66 US dental schools. Topics included both curricular and extracurricular global health activities offered, including Short‐term Experiences in Global Health (STEGHs). Key components were identified and classified as domains and components for the purpose of discussion: Domain #1: Program support and administrative factors (components: a support, faculty support, and extracurricular activities), Domain #2: Academic teaching (components: global health track, didactic courses, and cultural awareness and communication teaching), and Domain #3: STEGHs, (components: School‐based STEGHs, al organization‐based STEGHs, and exchange programs). Results Most notably among respondents, 72% strongly agreed/agreed that global health should be a part of the dental curriculum, 81% strongly agreed/agreed that students benefit from participating in global health experiences, and 43% of schools had a faculty member dedicated to global health work. In this study of dental schools, 44% offered didactic courses in global health, and 62% of schools offered STEGHs. Conclusion The results of this study offer a description of key components of global health education programs in U.S. dental schools. Schools surveyed offer a combination of both didactic courses and STEGH programs for their students. Global health education may improve dental students’ skills related to managing a diverse patient population.

“Public health is global”: examining Indian stakeholders’ perspectives on Global Health education

Background: Global health education has attracted significant attention in recent years from academic institutions in developed countries. In India however, a recent analysis found that delivery of global health education is fragmented and called for academic institutions to work towards closing the developing country/developed country dichotomy. Our study explored the understanding of global health in the Indian setting and opportunities for development of a global health education framework in Indian public health institutions. Methods: The study involved semi-structured interviews with staff of Indian public health institutes and other key stakeholders in global health in India. The interview questions covered participants' interpretation of global health and their opinion about global health education in India. Thematic analysis was conducted. A theoretical framework developed by Smith and Shiffman to explain political priority for global health initiatives was adapted to guide our analysis to explore development of global health education in Indian public health institutions. Results: A total of 17 semi-structured interviews were completed which involved 12 faculty members from five public health institutes and five stakeholders from national and multilateral organisations. Global health was viewed as the application of public health in real-world setting and at a broader, deeper and transnational scale. The understanding of global health was informed by participants' exposure to work experiences and interaction with overseas faculty. Most common view about the relationship between global health and public health was that public health has become more global and both are interconnected. Integration of global health education into public health curriculum was supported but there were concerns given public health was still a new discipline in India. Most participants felt that global health competencies are complementary to public health competencies and build on core public health skills. Employability, faculty exposure to global health and 'sensitisation' of all stakeholders were key barriers to offering global health education programs. Conclusion: Global health as a concept and educational practice is embryonic in India but there is considerable potential to grow in order to ensure that education meets the needs of future practitioners of global health in the context of sustainable development.

IntroductionDebate around a common definition of global health has seen extensive scholarly interest within the last two decades; however, consensus around a precise definition remains elusive. The objective of this study was to systematically review definitions of global health in the literature and offer grounded theoretical insights into what might be seen as relevant for establishing a common definition of global health.MethodA systematic review was conducted with qualitative synthesis of findings using peer-reviewed literature from key databases. Publications were identified by the keywords of ‘global health’ and ‘define’ or ‘definition’ or ‘defining’. Coding methods were used for qualitative analysis to identify recurring themes in definitions of global health published between 2009 and 2019.ResultsThe search resulted in 1363 publications, of which 78 were included. Qualitative analysis of the data generated four theoretical categories and associated subthemes delineating key aspects of global health. These included: (1) global health is a multiplex approach to worldwide health improvement taught and pursued at research institutions; (2) global health is an ethically oriented initiative that is guided by justice principles; (3) global health is a mode of governance that yields influence through problem identification, political decision-making, as well as the allocation and exchange of resources across borders and (4) global health is a vague yet versatile concept with multiple meanings, historical antecedents and an emergent future.ConclusionExtant definitions of global health can be categorised thematically to designate areas of importance for stakeholders and to organise future debates on its definition. Future contributions to this debate may consider shifting from questioning the abstract ‘what’ of global health towards more pragmatic and reflexive questions about ‘who’ defines global health and towards what ends.
