Global food systems transitions have enabled affordable diets but had less favourable outcomes for nutrition, environmental health, inclusion and equity

Abstract: Over the past 50 years, food systems worldwide have shifted from predominantly rural to industrialized and consolidated systems, with impacts on diets, nutrition and health, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. We explore the potential for sustainable and equitable food system transformation (ideal state of change) by comparing countries at different stages of food system transition (changes) using food system typologies. Historically, incomes have risen faster than food prices as countries have indu… Show more

“…These changes have resulted in positive and negative effects across various dietary, nutrition and health, environmental sustainability, and livelihood outcomes. One analysis revealed that although the affordability of a recommended diet has improved over time, current food systems are falling short of delivering optimal nutrition and health outcomes, environmental sustainability, and inclusion and equity for all ( Ambikapathi et al, 2022 ). More specifically, recommended diets have become more affordable among some populations as food systems have transitioned from more rural types to more industrialized ones.…”

“…This highlights the need to shift thinking from only quantity towards quality, and not only economics, but nutrition. The good nutrition imperative means changing the thinking implicit in the entire global system away from a purely financial bottom line towards a focus on people (Ambikapathi et al , 2022). This fundamental shift will not be easy, yet the growing rates of malnutrition worldwide should make it clear that increasing the availability of healthy diets worldwide can no longer be seen as a luxury, rather, it is an imperative (Popkin and Ng, 2022).…”

“…This tension is exacerbated by the polarized debate on whether solutions must be localized or coordinated at a more global scale (the local-global food debate) (Wood et al, 2023) and the siloed decisionmaking processes dominating policy for the agricultural sector (FAO et al, 2022;McGreevy et al, 2022). Current agricultural policies show insufficient consideration of social vulnerabilities, regional disparities in geography, culture and socioeconomic conditions (Ambikapathi et al, 2022), technological readiness, vested interests, and power imbalances (Béné, 2022;Zurek et al, 2022). For decades the agrifood industry, subsidized by national governments and aided by global trade agreements, has created a political economy that reinforces unsustainability and injustices worldwide (Juskaite & Haug, 2023;Woodhill et al, 2022).…”
