Global expansion of sustainable irrigation limited by water storage

Abstract: Providing affordable and nutritious food to a growing and increasingly affluent global population requires multifaceted approaches to target supply and demand aspects. On the supply side, expanding irrigation is key to increase future food production, yet associated needs for storing water and implications of providing that water storage, remain unknown. Here, we quantify biophysical potentials for storage-fed sustainable irrigation—irrigation that neither depletes freshwater resources nor expands croplands bu… Show more

“…However, such a determination remains challenging due to the influence of a range of factors including economic conditions of farmers, incentives provided by local/federal government, penetration of agricultural extension education among the farming community, farmers' social networks, water availability, political considerations, water use by other sectors, water infrastructure, and more [43,[60][61][62][63][64]. The study does not account for water consumption by poultry and livestock in agricultural sectors.…”

“…Under a 3°C warming, up to 350 Mha of global rain-fed croplands is suitable for sustainable irrigation expansion ( 16 ). This irrigation expansion can boost agricultural productivity and feed up to 1.4 billion more people, although more water storage will be needed ( 62 ). However, in areas with physically available renewable blue water resources, irrigation can be blocked by a variety of socioeconomic and political factors that cause the so-called agricultural economic water scarcity ( 6 ).…”

“…The issue of water shortage for irrigation is becoming increasingly serious worldwide, particularly in the developing countries ( Schmitt et al., 2022 ). It is imperative to establish a proper framework for the irrigation techniques tailored to specific crops and purposes, whether the crop is grown for forage, grains, or fiber ( Chen et al., 2020 ).…”
