Global Epidemiology of Ischemic Heart Disease: Results from the Global Burden of Disease Study

Abstract: Background Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Also referred to as coronary artery disease (CAD) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACD), it manifests clinically as myocardial infarction and ischemic cardiomyopathy. This study aims to evaluate the epidemiological trends of IHD globally. Methods The most up-to-date epidemiological data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) dataset were analyzed. GBD collates data from a large number of sources, including research studi… Show more

“…Since then, many life-saving treatments have been discovered [ 1 , 2 , 3 ] and myocardial infarction mortality rates have now fallen to 30% in the UK [ 4 ]. However, although there has been lots of progress, myocardial infarction still causes a global clinical burden [ 5 ]. During myocardial infarction, a coronary artery becomes blocked and approximately 1 billion cardiomyocytes die as they are starved of oxygen and nutrients [ 6 ].…”

“…Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major public health problem, affecting around 126 million individuals worldwide [ 1 ]. Improvements in the pharmacological and interventional treatment of CAD, including primary percutaneous interventions (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), decreased the short-term mortality rate after AMI [ 2 , 3 ].…”

“…In particular, revascularization strategies are the most curative treatment methods. Surgical revascularization under cardiopulmonary bypass (CBP) by experienced teams for severe coronary artery disease patients is an effective and well‐understood method 1‐3 . Despite all advances, professionals are focusing on developing methods for understanding the quality of bypass, competence of myocardial perfusion, and longevity of the procedure.…”
