Global epidemiology of hepatitis B virus infection: New estimates of age-specific HBsAg seroprevalence and endemicity

Abstract: Declines in HBV infection prevalence may be related to expanded immunization. The increasing overall number of individuals being chronically infected with HBV, and the widespread global differences in HBV prevalence call for targeted approaches to tackle HBV-related mortality and morbidity. HBV infection prevalence data are needed at country and sub-national level to estimate disease burden and guide health and vaccine policy.

“…Although effective vaccines against HBV are available in many countries, chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection remains a significant global health problem. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 240 million people are afflicted with CHB infections, and these people are at risk for cirrhosis and HCC 4, 5. Currently, two classes of anti‐HBV reagents are clinically available: interferon‐α and nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs).…”

“…Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global public health problem that affects an estimated 240 million people, with the greatest burden of disease among Asians, most of whom acquire the infection from perinatal or horizontal transmission occurring during the first five years of life [1,2]. Cambodia is considered highly endemic for chronic HBV infection, with an estimate by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific of 9% hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroprevalence in the general population [3], ranging from 7.7%-13% in various subpopulations of adults based on convenience sample data [4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…HIV increases the risk of cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease in HBV co-infection. In Central America, the adult hepatitis B prevalence rate is below 2% [2]. Absent data on Honduras, HBV prevalence rates in El Salvador and Guatemala, Honduras’ neighbours, are 1.0 and 0.5, respectively [3].…”
