Global emissions of non-methane hydrocarbons deduced from SCIAMACHY formaldehyde columns through 2003–2006

Abstract: Abstract. Formaldehyde columns retrieved from the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography/Chemistry (SCIAMACHY) instrument onboard ENVISAT satellite through 2003 to 2006 are used as top-down constraints to derive updated global biogenic and biomass burning flux estimates for the non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) precursors of formaldehyde. Our interest is centered over regions experiencing strong emissions, and hence exhibiting a high signal-to-noise ratio and lower … Show more

“…Earlier, formaldehyde retrievals from GOME were used to estimate isoprene emissions with similar results [Palmer et al, 2006]. With the same method, but SCIAMACHY formaldehyde data, Stavrakou et al [2009] estimate isoprene emissions about 40% lower than MEGAN2 for North America. Muller et al [2008] used MEGAN2 in a global model using ECMWF meteorology and a detailed canopy environment model and found an underprediction of the modeled isoprene flux by about 30% for the Harvard forest site.…”

“…Column retrievals of HCHO have been successfully used to constrain non-methane hydrocarbon emissions from biogenic and biomass burning sources (Stavrakou et al, 2009) and, in some cases, to trace secondary organic aerosol concentrations . These findings suggest that it might be possible to derive [ORG] in the proxies given by Eqs.…”
