Global dust model intercomparison in AeroCom phase I

Abstract: Desert dust plays an important role in the climate system through its impact on Earth's radiative budget and its role in the biogeochemical cycle as a source of iron in high-nutrient-low-chlorophyll regions. A large degree of diversity exists between the many global models that simulate the dust cycle to estimate its impact on climate. “…Central Chile is subject to subsidence regimes and mountain waves so desert dust can be brought down to ground, as in the west coast of North America (McKendry et al, 2008). In Santiago, the dust comes from regional scale transport whereas in western North America it comes from intercontinental (Goudie, 2014;Huneeus et al, 2010). “…In this analysis, dust surface concentration and dust AOD at 550 nm were simulated over SW Asia as composite-mean maps for the different CasHKI modes. The model performance for dust simulations over Asia has been evaluated by several studies (e.g., Takemura et al, 2002;Goto et al, 2011;Huneeus et al, 2011;Kaskaoutis et al, 2014a), also including the Sistan basin in eastern Iran (Kaskaoutis et al, 2015a).
