Global diversity of tardigrades (Tardigrada) in freshwater

Abstract: Tardigrada is a phylum closely allied with the arthropods. They are usually less than 0.5 mm in length, have four pairs of lobe-like legs and are either carnivorous or feed on plant material. Most of the 900+ described tardigrade species are limnoterrestrial and live in the thin film of water on the surface of moss, lichens, algae, and other plants and depend on water to remain active and complete their life cycle. In this review of 910 tardigrade species, only 62 species representing13 genera are truly aquati… Show more

“…According to a study conducted on Global distribution of tardigrades in freshwater by (Garey et al, 2008), out of 910 species, only 62 species representing 13 genera were found to be the only ones in aquatic habitats. Five genera namely Carphania, Dactylobiotus, Macroversum, Pseudobiotus, and Thermozodium were found to be exclusively aquatic while other genera like Hypsibius, Isohypsibius, Amphibolus, Mixibius had some species that were aquatic as per the study.…”

“…Evidence of such large reticulate amoebae in the lichen samples could indicate predation on portions of the lichen hyphae. The diet of tardigrades is typically plant matter or smaller invertebrates, including protozoa and rotifers (Garey et al 2008;Glime 2013). They also consume bacteria and fungi (Kinchin 1988) as well as feeding on nematodes (S anchez-Moreno et al 2008).…”

“…Most of the known non-marine tardigrade species live on terrestrial substrates such as mosses, liverworts, cushion-shaped plants, lichens, and leaf litter. Some of these species also occur in freshwater habitats, while others are found exclusively therein [1,3].…”
