Global Competencies of Regional Stem Cell Research: Bibliometrics for Investigating and Forecasting Research Trends

Abstract: We employed a bibliometric approach to examine regional stem cell research in the USA, the UK, Japan and China based on publications from 2007 to 2011 with a co-citation clustering analysis to identify region-specific clusters of global competencies. We observed that there are clear differences in the number and interdisciplinary spread of competencies across regions: the USA retains the largest capacity and capability for pursuing medical and pharmaceutical applications; China has shown substantial growth thr… Show more

“…Many previous bibliometric studies [21][22][23][24] were carried output which aimed to analyze the global and national research output on stem cells -focusing either on examining the research strengths or depicting research trends or on its applications in Parkinson's disease 25 and diabetes syndrome. 26,27 There is, however, only one extensive review, 28 which has studied its applications in relation to Covid-19, identifying existing clinical case studies, case reports, clinical trials, pilot studies, in vitro and in vivo studies.…”

“…Instead, Krampen et al [37] also rely on time series computing the Single Moving Average method to predict research trends in psychology. Watatani et al [83] developed a bibliometric approach based on co-citation analysis, which provides insights for technology forecasting and strategic research, as well as development planning and policy-making.…”

“…The field of stem cells has experienced a revival with the discovery of iPS cells in 2006 at Kyoto University (Barfoot, 2013;Watatani et al, 2013). iPS cells refer to cells from mature tissues forced to return to a pluripotent state-the ability to transform into almost any cell type-by the introduction of a series of transcription factors, or proteins, in a process referred as "reprogramming" or generation (Fig.…”
