Global Change Effects on Plant Chemical Defenses against Insect Herbivores

Abstract: This review focuses on individual effects of major global change factors, such as elevated CO 2 , O 3 , UV light and temperature, on plant secondary chemistry. These secondary metabolites are well-known for their role in plant defense against insect herbivory. Global change effects on secondary chemicals appear to be plant species-specific and dependent on the chemical type. Even though plant chemical responses induced by these factors are highly variable, there seems to be some specificity in the response to … Show more

“…As previously described, warming tends to reduce levels of phenolics but increase levels of terpenoids in plant foliage (Zvereva and Kozlov, 2006;Bidart-Bouzat and Imeh-Nathaniel, 2008). Likewise, drought can also increase and/or decrease terpenoids (e.g.…”

“…Surprisingly little is known about the impacts of elevated temperature on concentrations of secondary metabolites in plants (Bidart-Bouzat and Imeh-Nathaniel, 2008). According to the growth-differentiation balance hypothesis (Herms and Mattson, 1992), if resources (e.g.…”

“…To add to dietary complexity, feeding by herbivores can influence the concentration and distribution of both chemicals and nutrients. Environmental conditions that change over short (e.g., seasons) and longtime periods (e.g., global climate change) can also influence concentrations of PSMs (Bidart-Bouzat and Imeh-Nathaniel, 2008;Lindroth, 2010) as well as toxicity of PSMs (Dearing, 2012;Dearing et al, 2008). In some cases, changes in concentration of PSMs may differ between terrestrial and aquatic systems.…”

“…The effects of external drivers (such as global change components) on organisms can be studied by investigating the response of individuals (behavior, morphology, physiology) or populations (reproduction, survivorship) (Bale et al., 2002; Bidart‐Bouzat & Imeh‐Nathaniel, 2008). Morphological changes in response to environmental drivers are usually studied within the framework of trait‐based ecology (Deraison, Badenhausser, Loeuille, Scherber, & Gross, 2015).…”
