Global change and viticulture in the Mediterranean region: a case of study in north-eastern Spain

Abstract: Viticulture in the Mediterranean region has been improved by agronomic methods based on ecophysiological and genetic knowledge of the species and varieties cultivated. Plant growth, yield and quality are highly dependent on climate. Grape sugar content and wine alcohol content are considered as important quality parameters. The objective of our study is to analyse the effects of the current global change on the percentage of alcohol by volume (ABV) in red wines from vineyards located in the Montsant Designatio… Show more

“…During the last two decades, the air temperature has increased by 0.85 °C [ 28 ]. In fact, annual average minimum temperatures in Spain have increased over the last century by 1.5 °C, and by 0.6 °C during the last 25 years [ 29 ]. The most probable outcome of climate ensemble model projections foresees increasesof1.8 to 4.0 °C by the end of the 21st century (2090–2099) relative to the period 1980–1999.…”

“…Recent global warming has advanced spring phenological events of many woody species, whereas other species have shown an opposite behavior, delaying these events [9][10][11]. Funes et al [12] have shown for apple trees that changes in blooming dates, both advancement or delay, can result from a mean temperature increase resulting from a trade-off between a delay in CR completion and advancement in heat requirement fulfilment.…”

“…Indeed, applying multidisciplinarity is often difficult for several reasons: limited funding allocation due to a traditional academic structure that discourages multidisciplinary collaboration, practical challenges related to the management of resources and researchers, and methodological challenges related to the connection between disciplines or the use of established ways to approach a research theme (Pooley et al 2014;Thompson et al 2020;Dick et al 2016). However, having a multidisciplinary approach is important considering the challenges that VLs will face due to climate change and the fact that these challenges are characterized by a high degree of complexity due to the interactions of climate change with other drivers of change (Lopez-Bustins et al 2013;de Herralde et al 2010).…”
