Global Artificial Photosynthesis and Renewable Energy Storage and Policy for the Sustainocene

Abstract: Among developing strategies for renewable energy conversion and storage, artificial photosynthesis (AP) has many long‐term advantages over currently favored strategies such as small‐ and large‐scale lithium‐ion batteries. Such advantages may not be clearly revealed by recent methods of AP including hybrid nanotechnology–synthetic biology systems. This paper critiques some of these recent developments in the context of the long‐term goal of integrating AP (conducted without enslaving biological life) into every… Show more

“…Where [20] explain benefits of using lithium-ion batteries on small as well as large scale, a new idea of 'artificial photosynthesis' for energy is proposed in [21], this method presents an approach by which energy is produced and in addition it supports some biological processes for example making food and more. As discussed in section IV (B), the size and modelling of battery is also a big challenge to be solved.…”

“…Although natural photosynthesis is a product of continued evolution stemming from environmental pressures and opportunities, it is not designed to satiate the material and fuel-consumption demands of modern societies . Conversely, if the associated technological and policy challenges can be surmounted, artificial photosynthesis offers a route to meeting global human energy demands with minimal environmental impact. ,,, In this context, designing artificial photosynthetic assemblies that use “just the best bits” of the biological counterpart is a promising approach. , …”

“…Renewable energies have emerged as clean alternatives to overcome environmental and energy crisis of the fossil energies. [ 1 ] However, due to the alternating availability of renewable energy sources, [ 2 ] rechargeable batteries have been unavoidably considered as key intermediate for dispatchable load of their energy. [ 3 ] At present, Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are the most widely used rechargeable energy storage systems.…”
