Global and Regional Estimates of Prevalent and Incident Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Infections in 2012

Abstract: BackgroundHerpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) commonly causes orolabial ulcers, while HSV-2 commonly causes genital ulcers. However, HSV-1 is an increasing cause of genital infection. Previously, the World Health Organization estimated the global burden of HSV-2 for 2003 and for 2012. The global burden of HSV-1 has not been estimated.MethodsWe fitted a constant-incidence model to pooled HSV-1 prevalence data from literature searches for 6 World Health Organization regions and used 2012 population data to deriv… Show more

“…1,2 In 2012, HSV-1 prevalence was estimated at 3.7 billion people globally between the ages of 0 and 49 years, with an estimated 140 million people ages 15 to 49 years having genital HSV-1 infections. 3 The HSV-2 prevalence in 2012 was estimated at 417 million individuals worldwide between the ages of 15 and 49 years. 4 The burden increases risk of transmission of HSV infections to neonatal offspring.…”

“…The prevalence of HSV-1 and 2 differs widely between and within countries (Looker et al, 2015). Daily suppressive therapy with acyclovir, famciclovir and valacyclovir decreases HSV shedding dramatically and thereby decreases transmission along with decreased HIV viral loads (Nag et al, 2015).…”

“…1 Among the two herpes simplex viruses, HSV-1 infection is more prevalent, affecting 3709 million people across the world (67%) belonging to the age group 15 -49 years. 2 Whereas, HSV-2 is less prevalent than HSV-1 and it affects 417 million people (11.3%) world over. 3 Herpes simplex is a recurrent self limiting viral infection.…”
