Glistening formation in a new hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens

Abstract: Background: The formation of fluid-filled microvacuoles, termed glistenings, is a common complication of intraocular lenses (IOLs) made from hydrophobic acrylate. Using our well-established in-vitro laboratory method, we evaluated a new IOL material’s resistance to glistening formation. Methods: An in-vitro stress test for glistening induction was performed on twenty samples of hydrophobic acrylic IOLs: ten of the new Eyecryl ASHFY600 (Biotech Vision Care, Ahmedabad, India) compared with ten samples of AcrySof … Show more

“…7 In addition, a 3-month follow-up limits the assessment of long-term effects observed with AcrySof material, such as that of lens glistenings that have been shown to increase light scatter and may potentially reduce vision quality over time. 8,9 Moreover, recent studies suggest that IOL glistening will continue to increase over time rather than plateau. 10,11 Previously published studies of the ZFR00V IOL and other presbyopia-correcting IOLs support the CDVA findings of this study.…”

“…Corticosteroids have a leading role in the management. Regardless to the shape, productive company, material properties, and surface technology of materials, acute IOL discoloration can be occurred in almost all types of IOLs such as hydrophilic acrylic IOL, acrylic hydrophobic IOL, hydrophilic acrylic IOL with a hydrophobic surface, trifocal IOL, silicone IOL, and PMMA IOL [14][15][16][17][18][20][21][22][23][24][53][54][55][56][57] . However, some types of discoloration are more common is some particular types of IOLs.…”
