Glassy cell carcinoma of the cervix

Abstract: A clinicopathologic analysis of 13 cases of glassy cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is presented. The glassy cell carcinoma is considered to be a poorly differentiated mixed adenosquamous carcinoma. Its histologic appearance is distinctive, being characterized by cells with a moderate amount of cytoplasm having a ground glass or finely granular appearance, a distinct cell wall that stains with eosin and PAS, and enlarged nuclei with prominent nucleoli. In the present study this tumor was associated with ex… Show more

“…Other poorly differentiated and possibly closely related cervical carcinomas have some but not all the characteristics of glassy cell carcinoma, and still other cervical carcinomas contain minor components of glassy cell carcinoma; tumors in both these groups should be excluded from the category of glassy cell carcinoma as originally defi ned. 5 Glassy cell carcinoma was found in the present patient by cervical cyto-screening performed during pregnancy. Glassy cell carcinoma generally affects younger women, as described above, and its association with pregnancy has been indicated.…”

“…4 The prognosis of patients with glassy cell carcinoma is considered to be poor because of its rapid progression, resistance to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, and metastatic/recurrent nature. 5 Histologically characterized by solid alveolar growth of tumor cells with abundant glassy cytoplasm, glassy cell carcinoma is a poorly differentiated cancer lacking glandular structures, plasmodesma, or keratinocytes. Intercellular boundaries are clear, and distinct nucleoli are present.…”

“…The World Health Organization Classification currently considers this tumor to be a subtype of “other epithelial tumors” [4]. The mean patient age of those with GCC is ~10 years less than that of patients with squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma of the cervix [1, 2, 5]. GCC was first described by Cherry and Glucksmann [6] in 1956 as a specific and distinctive entity of the most poorly differentiated adenosquamous carcinoma.…”

“…They defined the histological diagnostic criteria and indicated that this tumor was uncommon and associated with poor prognosis. Two decades later, Littman et al [2] described GCC tumors in detail, redefining and amplifying the histological criteria. Since then, interest in GCC has expanded and a number of studies have been conducted [13, 7–22].…”
