“…This variation in climate shows remarkable compatibility with the Greenland ice-core data, Previously, this question has been largely addressed from a land-based perspective (Gray and Lowe, 1977;Benn, 1997;Clapperton, 1997, Benn andLukas, 2006;Golledge, 2008;and references therein). However, it is clear that any attempt to understand the deglacial record of the British Ice Sheet must take both the marine and terrestrial records of change into consideration.…”

“…To deposit a glacial diamicton at this location it is necessary to invoke a preceding period of glacial deposition. Benn (1997) provides evidence for the retention of ice lobes in the sheltered sounds between Skye, Scalpay and Raasay during the deglaciation of the earlier Dimlington Stadial ice dome, so providing a potential source for these diamictons. This interpretation of an earlier age of deposition for LASF2 suggests that facies LASF1 may represent the reworking of LASF2 with only a limited contribution from material deposited directly beneath, or in front of, the Loch Lomond Stadial glacier.…”

“…Deglacial Phase I is inferred to represent decreased snow accumulation resulting from precipitation decline, whereas Deglacial Phase II is inferred to represent a response to the rapid climatic amelioration that occurred at the end of the stade. The simplicity of such a direct relationship between climatic change and glacier response during this period has been questioned by Bennett and Boulton (1993) and Bennett (1994), the conflicting theories being discussed in Benn (1997).…”

“…The glacial-geomorphology of NW Scotland has been the subject of much research (Bennett and Boulton, 1993a;Wilson and Evans, 2000;Clark et al, 2004;Bradwell, 2005;Lukas, 2005;Benn and Lukas, 2006;Lukas and Benn, 2006;Lukas and Lukas, 2006a;b) due to the sensitivity of the region to climatic fluctuations caused by changes in the configuration of the Gulf Stream, making it the ideal place to study and constrain atmosphere-cryosphere interactions (Ruddiman et al, 1980;Benn, 1997b). Field mapping provides numerical constraints for ice sheet models, which play a role in the prediction of future climate change (Jones, 1998;Golledge and Hubbard, 2005;Golledge et al, 2008).…”
