Glacier changes in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve of China during 2000–2018

Abstract: The glaciers in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve of China (SNRC) are a significant water resource for the Yangtze, Yellow, and Mekong rivers. Based on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM)/ Operational Land Imager (OLI) images acquired in 2000, 2010, and 2018, the outlines of glaciers in the SNRC were obtained by combining band ratio method with manual interpretation.

“…With the accelerated warming in the region, the cryospheric elements have changed, affecting the regional hydrological processes . According to Landsat Thematic Mapper/ Operational Land Imager data, from 2000 to 2018, the number of glaciers in the TRHR region decreased by 69, and the glacier area decreased by 271.95 km 2 (Zhang et al, 2022a). Under the conditions of rapid regional warming, the glacier runoff in the three basins all present an obvious increasing trend from 1961 to 2012 (Jiang et al, 2016).…”

“…The region's climate type is plateau continental, with extensive wetlands and dense marshes, and has abundant water resources. Sanjiangyuan is called the "Chinese Water Tower" and is the birthplace of the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River, which is an important source of fresh water in China [38][39][40]. Therefore, monitoring changes in the plateau forest cover of this region is important for water conservation, the global carbon cycle, climate change analysis, and combating global warming.…”
