Glacier and climate evolution in the Pariacacá Mountains, Peru

Abstract: Glaciers in Peru play a major role in water availability and they also have direct implications on natural hazards such as glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and/or ice avalanches, which have caused a high number of fatalities and damage to infrastructure in the last decades. Despite a noticeable effort to quantify and understand the shrinking and thawing of glaciers in Peru, there are still regions where detailed assessment is still missing. In this work, a set of remote sensing images were used to map, for … Show more

“…In Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, there remain large glaciers that are expected to last for decades despite the extreme negative mass balance they have been subject to. However, in these countries there are also mountain ranges that have smaller glaciers that may disappear sooner (L opez-Moreno et al, 2014(L opez-Moreno et al, , 2019Ramírez et al, 2001;Thompson et al, 2011). Glaciers in Africa, Australasia, and Venezuela are currently very reduced in extent, and various studies have projected their complete thaw before 2050 (Chevallier et al, 2010;Cullen et al, 2006;Morris et al, 2006;Veettil & Kamp, 2019;Veettil & Wang, 2018b).…”
