Glacial geomorphology of the Chirripó National Park, Costa Rica

Abstract: Several regions of tropical America show imprints of past glacial activity. These relict landforms can support the understanding of past climate conditions, such as during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and the implications that these paleoclimatic conditions could have had on landscape change. Here, we present and analyze glacial morphologies for the Chirripó National Park in Costa Rica based on aerial imagery (1:25,000), detailed Digital Elevation Models, geomorphic mapping, as well as geomorphic assessment… Show more

“…Nonetheless, digital geomorphological mapping definitely democratizes landform cartography performed by geomorphology specialists worldwide, due to the homogenization of its techniques. Cerro Chirripó is a paleoglacial volcano-plutonic-shaped mountain with sharp and convex arêtes [68]. This summit symbolizes the top point in Costa Rica (c in Figures 4 and 5; 3820 m.a.s.l.).…”

“…Glacial landscapes are limited to certain areas of Guatemala and Costa Rica [61]. The highest summits of Alto de los Cuchumatanes in Guatemala [62] and Chirripó National Park in Costa Rica [63][64][65] present erosional and depositional landforms derived from the glacial and periglacial during the Last Glacial Maximum (approximately 21 ka ago).…”

“…In the case of Costa Rica, there are maps for the whole country at small scales of 1:1,000,000 [7] , medium scales of 1:350,000 and 1:100,000 [8][9][10] , and few at large scales of 1:50,000 [11,12] . However, there is no geomorphological mapping at 1:50,000 scale for the whole country (base mapping), in addition to very few maps at scales 1:25,000 or larger [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] . This absence of detailed geomorphological cartography for Costa Rica creates the need to generate new maps that integrate the variables of genesis, formation processes, morphology, evolution and age of the relief, at scales that can be useful as instruments for land-use planning and risk management.…”
