Give car-free life a try: Designing seeds for changed practices

Abstract: For sustainable practices to emerge, they have to be tried out. In the design intervention A Car-free Year, we studied the particularities of three families' changed practices. With a collaborative mind-set, the practices' constituting elements were analysed, and their intertwined links followed, forming possible design concepts. When designing these seeds for changed practices, we have found, through the knowledge gained from the participants' different perspectives, possibilities to design initiatives that c… Show more

“…For Pilvi, trialling bus use included rethinking her role as a colleague and learning a new role as a passenger (Hesselgren and Hasselqvist, 2016; Laurier et al 2008; Southerton, 2013). Using the bus meant sharing the same ride with colleagues and thus having to ‘start the work day earlier’, as they spent the bus trip discussing work concerns.…”

“…Such projects have involved 30 'climate families' in Tampere, six families performing 'climate exercises' in Helsinki and Vantaa and five households spending a 'carbon-free April' in Joensuu. 1 Similar projects can be found, for example, in Sweden and Denmark (see Ahonen 2011;Hesselgren and Hasselqvist 2016). In these projects, measurable outcomes (such as reductions in carbon emissions) and publicity have been important.…”

“…In this article, we focus on the later stages of the research project, the concept design, and the stakeholder discussions. More information about the families' experiences during the car-free year can be found in our previous work (Hasselqvist, Hesselgren, and Bogdan 2016;Hesselgren and Hasselqvist 2016).…”

“…Car-Free participants also described finding it hard to go against the norm, e.g. when they received help from car-owning friends and could not reciprocate (Hesselgren et al, 2016). Strict interventions thus require large efforts from the participants.…”
