GIS-supported mapping of low-temperature geothermal potential taking groundwater flow into account

Abstract: a b s t r a c tTo promote the utilization of ground-source heat pumps, a new methodology to calculate the lowtemperature geothermal potential (LTGP) of a region is presented. The methodology is applicable worldwide, and it considers both closed-and open-loop systems. This new approximation for closedloops calculates the admissible heat flux exchange with the ground according to an analytical solution of the heat transport equation in porous media. Open-loop systems are calculated as a function of a sustainable… Show more

“…To estimate the very shallow geothermal energy potential of hGSHP systems, Bertermann et al (2014) included legal constraints, climatic parameters and soil textures. García-Gil et al (2015) proposed a low temperature geothermal potential (LTGP) for open-and closed-loop systems. They estimated the LTGP of the saturated zone using a steady-state analytical solution for conductive and advective heat transfer in porous media and applying a line source model for the unsaturated zone.…”

“…These systems can be found in aerial or submarine environments Wynn et al, 2007). In the sedimentary record, channelized systems can also represent interesting reservoirs for natural resources such as water and hydrocarbon (Fitterman et al, 1991;García-Gil et al, 2015;Mayall et al, 2006) or for storage of gas (e.g., carbon sequestration, Issautier et al 2014).…”
