GIS-Based Landslide Susceptibility Mapping of the Circum-Baikal Railway in Russia Using UAV Data

Abstract: The investigation of hard-to-reach areas that are prone to landslides is challenging. The research of landslide hazards can be significantly advanced by using remote sensing data obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Operational acquisition and high detail are the advantages of UAV data. The development of appropriate automated algorithms and software solutions is necessary for quick decision-making based on the received heterogeneous spatial data characterising various aspects of the environment. “…To monitor the health of ecosystems, RS has been used to measure changes in vegetation cover [76]. It can offer a wealth of knowledge regarding soil characteristics, but they need to be calibrated and verified using real-world data [193]. Ref.…”

“…The adoption of remote sensing techniques for landslide detection has great advantages compared to field surveys. At the regional level, to solve problems associated with mudflow hazards, Earth Remote Sensing (ERS) data from satellites (multispectral and radar) are often used, the advantage of which is accessible to any territory, and the absence of the need for terrestrial field research" [18] There are also different analyses that we can perform and compare to our results. For example, we could use "modern techniques encompassed morphometrical analysis of DEMs and interpretation of aerial photographs, orthoimages and hillshade models in a GIS environment, along with analysis of terrain 3D models to extract virtual measurements and better observe the morphological features" [19].…”

“…These indications have made UAS photogrammetry a competitive and efficient substitute for traditional geodetic techniques in terms of both quality and efficiency. In many different fields and disciplines, including mining [1,2], real estate cadastre [3,4], industry [5,6], geology [7,8], archeology [9,10], architecture [11,12], agriculture [13,14], and monitoring natural processes in the landscape [15,16], geohazards [17,18], or landslides [19,20], measurement using unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology is used.…”
