Tourism development especially in rural areas has changed residents’ economic, sociocultural, and environmental life. It’s important to analyze residents’ attitudes toward tourism development in their area. This study aimed to analyze the attitudes of the Batak Toba Ethnic as residents toward tourism development in Simanindo Subdistrict. This research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional survey. A survey with 115 residents as representatives of Batak Ethnic was conducted in June 2022. The findings revealed that several challenges of tourism development had been stated by residents including conflict over resources ownership, less involvement of residents, inadequate financial support, insufficient facilities, low quality of service and product, poor marketing, and unskilled human resources. The Batak Toba Ethnic as residents also obtained positive and negative impacts of tourism development in their area. Positive impacts included conserving culture and heritage, preserving nature, supporting trading of local products, upgrading public facilities, encouraging economic growth, increasing employment opportunities, enhancing additional income, improving the quality of life, increasing foreign investors, improving the standard of living and personal benefit for residents. However, negative impacts were inconsiderable. The main suggestions toward tourism development were enhance local people involvement and participation, increase attractions, accessibilities and amenities. The economic benefits has high correlation toward communities involvement and participation in tourism development. Keywords: attitudes, challenges, impacts, participation, tourism development

The tourism industry is growing along with technological developments and human needs. In fact, tourism is the main economic sector in several countries, including Indonesia. Tourism development requires the full support of the local community as a tourist destination. The purposes of this study were to analyze people's attitudes towards the impact of tourism and measure community readiness towards digital tourism development in Pangururan Subdistrict, Samosir Regency. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. Respondents were local people and community leaders with total of 79 people. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative data through qualitative deductive analysis of content. The results of the study showed the positive attitude of the community towards the impact of tourism both socio-cultural, economic and environmental. The highest mean value on economic impact. Community readiness for digital tourism development which consists of 6 dimensions, namely community knowledge about the issue, resources related to issue, community efforts, community knowledge of the efforts, leadership and community climate. The highest mean on leadership with preparation level. But overall the community's readiness for the development of digital tourism is at the preplanning level.

Tourism has become an extremely important sector in national economic development. Samosir District is one of the famous tourist destinations in Indonesia. There are 75 tourist sites spread over 9 subdistricts in Samosir. The distribution of attractions is located mostly in the subdistrict of Simanindo. The objectives of this research are to analyze the distribution of attractions and describe tourism accommodation in Simanindo Subdistrict. The qualitative approach is used in this research. The data used are compiled from observation and documentary. The results reveal that almost 19 tourist attractions spread in Simanindo Subdistrict. The attractions can be classified as natural attractions, historical attractions, and cultural attractions. There are 58 hotels (1326 rooms) and other accommodation to support 19 tourist sites in this area. The hotels consist of 2-star hotels totaling 5 buildings; 1-star hotel, class I jasmine hotels amounted to 30 buildings; class II jasmine hotel amounted to 17 buildings; and class III jasmine hotel amounted to 5 buildings.
