This article aims to provide a scientific basis for solutions to use soil cover for sustainable agricultural and rational forestry development. We used traditional methods such as survey and data collection; soil profile comparison method; vegetation indicator for soil degradation; determining the physical and chemical limiting factors of the soil; combined with the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology and the multi-criteria method (MCE) to conduct a soil degradation assessment for the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. In this study, nine indicators affecting the current soil degradation were selected and then the single-dimensional maps were superimposed to form the current soil degradation map for the study area at a scale of 1/10,000. The study results show that: lightly degraded soil accounts for 48.81% of the total natural area of the study area; medium degradation accounts for 22.07%; and severe degradation accounts for 19.66%. The study results show that most of the soil in the study area is at a moderate to severe level of degradation and shows the need for synchronous implementation of reasonable solutions to prevent degradation and use soil sustainably in the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam.

The aim of this study is to assess and identify the most suitable geospatial interpolation algorithm for environmental sciences. The research focuses on evaluating six different interpolation methods using annual average PM10 concentrations as a reference dataset. The dataset includes measurements obtained from a target air quality network (scenery 1) and a sub-dataset derived from a partitive clustering technique (scenery 2). By comparing the performance of each interpolation algorithm using various indicators, the study aims to determine the most reliable method. The findings reveal that the kriging method demonstrates the highest performance within environmental sciences, with a spatial similarity of approximately 70% between the two scenery datasets. The performance indicators for the kriging method, including RMSE (root mean square error), MAE (mean absolute error), and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error), are measured at 3.2 µg/m3, 10.2 µg/m3, and 7.3%, respectively.This study addresses the existing gap in scientific knowledge regarding the comparison of geospatial interpolation techniques. The findings provide valuable insights for environmental managers and decision-makers, enabling them to implement effective control and mitigation strategies based on reliable geospatial information and data. In summary, this research evaluates and identifies the most suitable geospatial interpolation algorithm for environmental sciences, with the kriging method emerging as the most reliable option. The study’s findings contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field and offer practical implications for environmental management and planning.

Utilizing Google Earth for Environmental Planning: Extraction of Point Source Locations at the Upstream of Sungai Skudai Catchment, Johor Malaysia

This study explores the application of geospatial technologies, specifically focusing on Google Earth (GE), to extract and mapping point source pollution in the upstream of Sungai Skudai Catchment (SRC). A thorough analysis of the locations of restaurants, launderettes, car washes, and workshops was made practical by the combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools with satellite images, which offers important data for environmental planning and water quality management. The research area, located in Johor, Malaysia, offers an example of the difficulties driven by rapid urban growth. This study provides comprehensive directions for extracting point sources, with a focus on verifying data via field surveys and Google searches. The upstream region was found to have 373 restaurants, 62 launderettes, 73 car washes, and 80 workshops. The dataset was further improved by the validation process, which determined any inconsistencies and added additional data. This study highlights the importance of field verification for improving point source pollution data accuracy. It also provides a base for comprehensive strategies for pollution management, land-use planning, and preservation efforts in rapidly changing environments, such as the Sungai Skudai Catchment.
