Abstract:The global Sustainable Development Goals influence the implementation of energy development strategies worldwide. However, in order to support local stakeholders in sustainable energy development strategies and climate change adaptation plans and the implementation of policies, there is a need to equip local decision makers with tools enabling the assessment of sustainable energy investments. In order to do so, the aim of this study is to create a novel tool for the assessment of solar radiation (SOLIS) in ArcGIS. The SOLIS tool builds on the existing ArcGIS algorithm by including input data conversion and post-processing of the results. This should expand the group of potential users of solar radiation analyses. The self-filtering tool excludes surfaces that are not suitable for solar energy investments due to geometrical reasons. The reduction of the size of the output data is positive for technical reasons (speed of the calculation and occupied storage place) and for cognitive reasons (reduction of the number of objects necessary to analyse by the user). The SOLIS tool limits the requirement for users to insert three-dimensional (3D) models of roofs (with any geometry) and select solar radiation calculation periods. The highlight of this research is to develop the decision support tool for the assessment of solar radiation, which would reduce the requirements for potential users, in order to promote indicator-based assessments among non-Geographical Information Systems (GIS) specialists.

Renewable energy sources have been placed as the key to facilitating to provide source of electricity generation. Solar power is one of the most preferable one among renewable energy sources due to the easy to generate in suitable environment. However, there are concerns with the location of solar power plants installation which causes low efficiency and ineffective use. Hence, determining the location for the usage of solar power sources is critical to mitigating those concerns. In addition, Turkey has been focused on investments on sustainable renewable energy sources and there are few studies which work on cities to reveal potential sources. In this study, GIS and intuitionistic fuzzy set based multi-criteria decision-making method is proposed for determining the most suitable areas for solar energy power plant potential site selection in Erzurum province, Turkey. Firstly, a solar energy power plant potential site selection map is made using a GIS program along with considering ecological risks and ecological criteria. Secondly, 20 districts of Erzurum are investigated in terms of 10 criteria (slope, aspect, solar irradiation, land use, wind speed, air temperature, air pressure, air humidity, land surface temperature and transmission line) using intuitionistic fuzzy sets. In these parameters the first time we looked the land use surface. The land use surface is affected the efficiency of the solar power plant. Finally, the comparisons of two methods are done to check consistency of results obtained. The results indicate that both approaches achieve same areas as the most suitable locations for solar power plants installations for Erzurum province in Turkey. The aim of this work is first to investigate possible locations for solar power plant installation using a mapping method, GIS, and then, Intuitionistic Fuzzy is applied to the problem to obtain optimum areas for solar energy. Also, more accurate results are provided comparing results of two methods, GIS and Intuitionistic Fuzzy. The results expose that 25,065.3 km2 for solar power plant suitable for solar power plan installation.

Sustainability in urban development is considered as a main concrete stone that effect directly the quality of life for its users. Land Suitability Analysis (LSA) using GIS as a multi criteria support tool reveals the best alternatives for the suitability of sustainable land development. Urban planners working under the umbrella of sustainability using recent technology should contribute their work directly to LSA. This paper aims to develop a new technique to be used by planner to reach best alternative for five main urban sectors (agriculture, Industry, Trade, Tourism, & Residential) using GIS as a multi criteria decision support tool (MCDS), accordingly choosing best city location will be accurately and analyzed upon LSA studies. LSA and MCDS are going to be applied on one survey unit map called Monof along Cairo – Alexandria Road. Results showed that different alternatives could be applied on the area of interest, and all of them are sustainable, but choosing the best deepened on the priority of querying the development sector. The paper suggests a pilot method for land development planning and choosing best city location that would be a guide for the governmental planning organization to support in taking right and analyzed planning decisions.
