Abstract-In this work we propose enhancing a typical robotic telepresence architecture by considering olfactory and wind flow information in addition to the common audio and video channels. The objective is to expand the range of applications where robotics telepresence can be applied, including those related to the detection of volatile chemical substances (e.g. land-mine detection, explosive deactivation, operations in noxious environments, etc.). Concretely, we analyze how the sense of smell can be integrated in the telepresence loop, covering the digitization of the gases and wind flow present in the remote environment, the transmission through the communication network, and their display at the user location. Experiments under different environmental conditions are presented to validate the proposed telepresence system when localizing a gas emission leak at the remote environment.

The ENRICHME Project: Lessons Learnt from a First Interaction with the Elderly

Abstract. The main purpose of the ENRICHME European project is to develop a socially assistive robot that can help the elderly, adapt to their needs, and has a natural behavior. In this paper, we present some of the lessons learnt from the first interaction between the robot and two elderly people from one partner care facility (LACE Housing Ltd, UK). The robot interacted with the two participants for almost one hour. A tremendous amount of sensory data was recorded from the multi-sensory system (i.e., audio data, RGB-D data, thermal images, and the data from the skeleton tracker) for better understanding the interaction, the needs, the reactions of the users, and the context. This data was processed offline. Before the interaction between the two elderly residents and the robot, a demo was shown to all the residents of the facility. The reactions of the residents were positive and they found the robot useful. The first lessons learnt from this interaction between Kompaï robot and the elderly are reported.

Design of a cloud robotic system to support senior citizens: the KuBo experience

This paper describes a system based on a robot, called KuBo, which relies on cloud resources to extend its capabilities for human interaction and environmental sensing to provide services for independent living. The robot uses text-to-speech and speech recognition services as well as an electronic agenda and web resources to perform several tasks. Moreover it retrieves smart environmental data from a DataBase to be aware of the context. In this paper, the cloud robotics approach is used to increase the skills of a robot, endowing the system with abilities for human-robot interaction and environmental sensing. The robotic services have been defined with a focus group involving 19 elderly volunteers and the system has been tested in a real environment with a couple of elderly users for five days. The aim of the experiment was to test the technical feasibility of the proposed cloud services using quantitative tools. The technical results show a success rate of 86.2 % for the navigation task and more than 90 % for the speech capabilities. Furthermore, the robustness of the system was also confirmed by users' qualitative feedback.
