Ginkgo biloba special extract LI 1370 improves dual-task walking in patients with MCI: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled exploratory study

Abstract: BackgroundIn patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), gait instability, particularly in dual-task situations, has been associated with impaired executive function and an increased fall risk. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) could be an effective mean to improve gait stability.AimsThis study investigated the effect of GBE on spatio-temporal gait parameters of MCI patients while walking under single and dual-task conditions.MethodsFifty patients aged 50–85 years with MCI and associated dual-task-related gait im… Show more

“…Of these, 7 tested medication, and 1 tested a medical device. All antidementia medication studies were non‐RCTs; the study on ginkgo biloba extract and the study on the medical device were RCTs. Sample sizes ranged from 14 to 120 and mean age from 67.8 to 85.4, and all the studies included a majority of female participants (range 52.9–88.9%).…”

“…In addition to cognitive deficits, patients with MCI can experience motor dysfunction, including deficits in gait and balance (Verghese et al 2002). Gschwind et al investigated the efficacy of a GBE to improve gait stability (Gschwind et al 2017). This GBE (120 mg) administered twice daily in MCI patients aged 50-85 years improved dual-task-related gait performance in MCI patients (Gschwind et al 2017).…”

“…For instance, a cognitive and gait dual‐tasking assessment in early Alzheimer's disease can provide derived digital outcomes that may distinguish amyloid‐positive from amyloid‐negative elderly subjects and predict falls . This paradigm has also been used to measure treatment effects of Ginkgo biloba in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) . In general, digital endpoints and diagnostics should be rater‐independent, more accurate, and more reliable than pen‐and‐paper COAs.…”
