Gingivitis Susceptibility and its Relation to Periodontitis in Men

Abstract: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate whether gingivitis susceptibility is associated with periodontitis. We analyzed data of 462 men in the VA Dental Longitudinal Study aged 47 to 92 years who had never smoked or had quit smoking 5+ years previously. Multiple logistic regression models, with tooth-level bleeding on probing at sites with attachment loss ≤ 2 mm as the dependent variable, were derived with adjustment for plaque, calculus, crown coverage, age, income, education, marital stat… Show more

“…Presently, no one knows the answer to this question, but there has been an awareness that differences in the inflammatory responsiveness of dental plaque cannot be fully accounted for by the quantity or quality of the biofilm . In other words, the predilection for attachment loss at inflamed gingival sites may be dependent on the susceptibility and responsiveness of the individual to the inflammatory insult . Moreover, specific types of inflammatory responses in the gingiva are necessary to initiate destruction of the connective tissue attachment apical to the cemento‐enamel junction.…”

“…It is believed that the intensity of gingival inflammation is a good indicator of disease activity, and precise determination of the gingival attachment loss measures the size of periodontal tissue destruction. 4,5 The conducted research recommend the use of clinical parameters such as Gingival Index (GI) which determines the degree of gingival inflammation; Plaque Index (PI), Tartar Index (TI) and the Subgingival Dental Calculus Index (SCI) which are indicators of the oral hygiene; Attachment level index (Al) which is an indicator of the periodontal tissue destruction in order to set up adequate diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan for periodontitis and adequately track the achieved results and the success of the applied therapy. [6][7][8][9][10] Lacalut active paste and Lacalut active solution are often used in patients with periodontal disease.…”

“…Smatra se da intenzitet inflamacije gingive predstavlja dobar pokazatelj aktivnosti i progresije oboljenja 4,5 . Patološki proces počinje inflamacijom gingive, a zatim se širi u dublje delove parodoncijuma 1-3 .…”
