Gingival Recessions and Noncarious Cervical Lesions: A Soft and Hard Tissue Challenge

Abstract: Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions are frequent and closely related defects which can be successfully treated by mucogingival surgery and restorative therapy techniques either used alone or in combination depending on the defect characteristics. Proper treatment planning is guided by careful clinical diagnosis. A selection of treatment modalities are presented and useful hints proposed: the long term success is always strictly bound to the identification and elimination of the ethiologic facto… Show more

“…Non‐carious cervical lesions and gingival recession are closely related to each other, in both etiologic factors and therapeutic procedures 6 . It has been reported that, after examining 900 teeth with gingival recession, no signs of the anatomic cemento‐enamel junction (CEJ) could be seen in about one‐half of the examined teeth 7 .…”

“…To our knowledge, there is no controlled clinical trial in the literature focused on the simultaneous periodontal and restorative procedures in the treatment of gingival recession associated with a non‐carious cervical lesion. Some previous reports 6,10,11 showed restorative and periodontal plastic surgery as isolated procedures to achieve esthetic results. The combined approach to treat this specific condition has not been explored in the literature, mainly considering periodontal parameters such as gingival health, stability of gingival margin, and gain in clinical attachment levels (CALs).…”

“…Embora seja fisiológica, a retração gengival (recessão) é aumentada devido aos fatores abrasivos, aos ácidos, à placa bacteriana, às inserções musculares e do freio lingual, à posição dos dentes na arcada e ao traumatismo oclusal (Löe et al, 1992;Toffenetti et al, 1998;Lindhe, 1999). O dente sofre diversas ações mecânicas durante a mastigação.…”
