Gif-Sur-Yvette Natural Radiocarbon Measurements I

Resumo Neste artigo, apresentamos a construção e os resultados de pesquisa realizada sobre as datações radiocarbônicas atualmente disponíveis para o contexto arqueológico brasileiro. Para organizar estas informações, construímos um banco de dados que se encontra hoje disponível para acesso aberto em Brazilian Radiocarbon Database (2021). Ao longo do artigo, explicitamos o procedimento adotado para construção do banco de dados, exploramos as dificuldades e soluções adotadas e apresentamos uma síntese dos dados obtidos até o momento. Com base nesta exposição, ressaltamos questões de ordem metodológica que influenciam a configuração atual dos dados e apresentamos propostas no sentido de aprimorar o conjunto de informações necessárias para ampliar o quadro cronológico disponível para a arqueologia brasileira.

The Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE) has operated a radiocarbon dating laboratory for almost 70 years. It has evolved from a traditional ß-decay counting to an accelerator mass spectrometry facility. In 2015, the LSCE received a major upgrade with the installation of a MICADAS. This evolution required adjustments in sample preparation to match the new capability to date samples as small as a few tens of µgC. We summarize here the sample cleaning procedures and the chemical purification or extraction treatment that we apply to the samples. We also report values of blank and reference materials of different matrices that match the large diversity of samples handled at LSCE.

The number of radiocarbon dates relating to Africa has increased rapidly during the last twelve years, as a glance through the back numbers of thisJournalwill show; and the increase reflects quite accurately the growth in our knowledge of later African prehistory. Almost 200 dates are given in this article which have not been quoted before, but even so the list is incomplete. It seems clear that a more and more selective approach will have to be adopted, and perhaps that is a desirable policy in any case. A paper of this kind does not reach a conslusion: it just comes to an end. However, there are some points which deserve particular attention. The thermoluminescence measureents from sites in Cameroun are of interest from a technical point of view, though they seem to be without historical calue. The Dynastic Egyptian dates are important historically as well as technically, and so are the dates from shell middens in Ivory Coast. Indication of contact across the western Sahara during the first millenniumb.c.are reinforced by additional dates for copper mine in Mauritania. One final points is worth repeating. There is evidence, by now amounting almost to proof, that pottery was present in the central Saharan highlands at an earlier date than in the Nile valley or North Africa; and this should affect out ideas about the whole configuration of later African prehistory.
