Gibbon ape leukemia virus-Hall's Island: new strain of gibbon ape leukemia virus

Abstract: Gibbon ape leukemia virus-Hall's Island (GaLV-H), a type C virus related to previous isolates of GaLV and simian sarcoma virus, was isolated from a gibbon ape with lymphocytic leukemia from a small colony of free-ranging gibbon apes on Hall's Island near Bermuda. We show here by molecular hybridization experiments that GaLV-H is approximately 60% related to three previous isolates of GaLV (GaLV-SF, GaLV-SEATO, and GaLV-Br) and is less closely related to simian sarcoma virus. The oligopyrimidine pattern of a tr… Show more

“…R-MuLV was grown in the chronically infected JIS-V9 cell line (29). A gibbon ape with acute lymphocytic leukemia from the Hall's Island colony near Bermuda was the source of GaLV-H (8,18). GaLV-H was isolated from the peripheral blood of the animal and was grown in leukemic leukocytes.…”

“…R-MuLV is an exogenously transmitted ecotropic virus of N,B-tropic host range infecting Mus musculus. GaLV-H is an exogenously transmitted virus, recently isolated from a gibbon ape with lymphocytic leukemia (8), which has been shown to be closely related (18) to other GaLV isolates and simian sarcoma-associated virus. R-MuLV and GaLV have been reported to show 20% nucleic acid homology by RNA-DNA hybridization (4).…”

“…GALV is a Gammaretrovirus which has been implicated in an outbreak of leukaemia in white handed gibbons (Hylobates lar), which were housed at the SEATO medical research facility in Bangkok in the late 1960's 26,27) . Subsequent to this initial outbreak, several other strains of GALV have been isolated from captive gibbons and other sub human primates in the US and Bermuda 28,29) . KoRV and GALV are so closely related that it seems almost certain that these two viruses share a common ancestor, and that there has been a cross species transmission between koalas and white handed gibbons 16,21) .…”

“…The extensive similarity between GaLVH and GaLVBr predicts that all of the structural proteins of these viruses are similar. Reitz et al (15) conclude that these two viruses are the most closely related viruses of this group because the oligopyrimidine compositions oftheir 5'-complementary DNA transcripts are the same. Competition radioimmunoassay of the gp7O's of GaLVH and GaLVBr also shows these two isolates to be closely related (12).…”
