Gibberellic Acid Induced Changes on Growth, Yield, Superoxide Dismutase, Catalase and Peroxidase in Fruits of Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia L.)

Abstract: Bitter gourd is one of the important cucurbits and highly liked among both farmers and consumers due to its high net return and nutritional value. However, being monoecious, it exhibits substantial variation in flower bearing pattern. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are known to influence crop phenology while gibberellic acid (GA3) is one of the most prominent PGRs that influence cucurbits phenology. Therefore, a field trial was conducted at University of Agriculture Faisalabad to evaluate the impact of a comme… Show more

“…For protection, especially against the pathogen, plants reply on innate immune mechanisms as a defensive tool 22 . The antioxidant system is a very efficient system evolved by plants to cope up supra-optimally produced superoxide radicals, its derivative free radicals and other organic radicals 20 25 . The first discovered and characterized antioxidant enzyme is Catalase (CAT).…”

“…For a produc-tive ridge gourd crop yield, ridge gourd growers can apply foliar urea at 1.5 to 3.0% concentration in addition tor 100kg ha -1 soil-added N. Many previous scholars have corporated the findings of the current report. Abbas et al, (2020) recorded incre-ased icrop igrowth iand iyield iafter applying idifferent concen-trations of fertiliser solutions in foliar shape.…”

“…Among these publications, several deal with nutrient supply [2][3][4][5], salinity [6,7], water supply [2,3,8] or lighting conditions [6]. Two manuscripts describe either the effects of applying chemical substances such as gibberellic acid [9] or seaweed extract [10] on the yield and quality of vegetable crops. Grafting as a method to mitigate the impacts of abiotic stress in vegetables was elucidated by a research paper by Ellenberger et al [3] and in a review by Devi et al [11].…”

“…In general, a large quantity of the contributions in this Special Issue present data on fruit vegetables such as watermelons, bitter gourd and tomatoes [2][3][4]9,11], with the latter being the focus of three publications. These crops were mostly grown in greenhouses [2][3][4], but some were grown in an open field [9] or under rain-out shelters [8].…”
