Giant Solitary Sebaceous Gland Hyperplasia on the Frontal Region

Abstract: A case of a 39 year-old Japanese woman with a dome-shaped elevated nodule on the frontal region of the scalp is reported. Our case is very similar both clinically and histologically to that of ‘giant solitary sebaceous gland hyperplasia’ described by Kudoh et al. in 1988.

“…They appear predominantly on the forehead, nose, cheeks. The approximate diameter of the lesion is 2-3 mm [4], although in a few isolated cases, nodules up to 5 cm diameter have been reported [5][6][7]. Histologically, hyperplastic, sebaceous gland lobules can be seen that group around a central, massively dilated excretion duct [8].…”

“…Besides its usual presentation of diffuse senile sebaceous gland hyperplasia, several other unusual clinical manifestations like circumscribed (senile) sebaceous gland hyperplasia, diffuse (presenile) sebaceous gland hyperplasia, linear or zosteriform type, areolar/vulvar sebaceous gland hyperplasia, Fordyce spots, sebaceous hyperplasia in rosacea and rhinophyma have been reported 2 . Giant sebaceous gland hyperplasia is extremely rare and so far only a few cases have been reported 3–5 . Our case had this unusual manifestation of sebaceous hyperplasia at puberty, which to the best of our knowledge has not been reported previously.…”
