S TRESSED environments have long been a question of great interest in a wide range of fields. So, many considerable literatures have grown up around this theme. In Egypt, there are several common problems related to the stressed environments. These stresses include decline of soil fertility, soil salinity and alkalinity, soil water logging, salt-affected soils, soil pollution, climate change, overpopulation growth, urban sprawl, land degradation, deterioration of natural resources, etc. More generally, national income will decline and will in turn result in the spread of social and political problems. Kafr El-Sheikh governorate can be considered one of the most important areas in Egypt, which calls "the governorate of the hope and the future" due to its location and wealths. Whereas, this governorate suffers from the most common stresses in Egypt including pollution, salinity, alkalinity and waterlogging. Great problems have been recorded in Kafr El-Sheikh related to stressed environments and suggested solutions also have been addressed. Therefore, a sustainable management should be adapted for overcoming these stressed environments in Kafr El-Sheikh.

Contamination of soil by toxic elements is a global issue of growing importance due to the increased anthropogenic impact on the natural environment. Conventional methods of soil decontamination possess disadvantages in forms of environmental and financial burdens. This fact leads to the search for alternative approaches of remediation of contaminated sites. One such approach includes phytoremediation. Phytoremediation advantages consist of low costs and small environmental impact. Several fast-growing energy plant species are suitable for phytoremediation purposes. Our article focuses on the phytoremediation potential of energy woody crops of Salix and Populus, and energy grasses Miscanthus and Arundo, which are grown primarily for biomass production. This approach links the environmentally friendly and economically less demanding remediation approach with the production of the local sustainable form of energy that decreases dependency on external energy supplies. Energy plants are able to provide high biomass yields in a short period of time, they are resistant against abiotic stress conditions and have the ability to accumulate toxic substances, thus helping to restore the desirable soil properties. The phytoremediation research is very interdisciplinary in its nature. In order to implement phytoremediation practices together with bioenergy successfully, it is crucial to involve site owners, local people, farmers, technology providers and consultants, remediation experts, sustainability assessors, regulatory agencies and certification bodies, biorefineries, financial sponsors, NGOs and other voluntary organizations. Some disadvantages and challenges of phytoremediation are also indicated.

Selenium is an essential element since it is necessary for metabolism and is also toxic to the living things if it is consumed above the desirable limit. For instance, up to 40 µg per d of dietary selenium is essential for human health; however, consumption of a little over 400 µg per d could result in adverse physiological problems. In the environment, selenium occurs in different species; of which selenate and selenite are its most toxic forms accounting for 95% of selenium toxicity. Though, selenium fortification is important for normal human physiology in selenium deficient environments, it needs to be minimized or removed from selenium rich environmental media. Thus, its quantification is significantly important to control per limit. Currently there is advancement in the detection and quantification of selenium in environmental including the use of a Hydride Generating Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Due to the excess occurrences of selenium in different locations the removal techniques from geogenic or anthropogenic sources include microbial metabolism, phytoremediation, sorption, membrane separation, coagulation, ion exchange and catalytic reduction. Most of all, the microbial removal is applied in drinking water supply and in selenium recovery from wastewater sludge. Though current selenium removal from sorption studies reported better efficiency, phytoremediation appears attractive due to its field scale application advantage. However, the fate of selenium following phytoremediation remains unaddressed.
