Giant pseudopolyps complicating Crohn's colitis

lnt roductionGiant pseudopolyps resembling neoplasms arid obstriicting the colon are well recognized entities in Crohn's disease. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(9)(10)(11), Gianr pseudopolyps measure more thaii 1.5cm in diameter and appear as solitary filling defects in the involved Segments (5). In the absence of obstriiction, siirgery is not necessary. In those cases the diagnosis can be established by barium enemn or colonoscopy. We present a case in which the whole descendiiig colon and part o f rhe sigmoid were stiidded with giant pseudopolyps in a patient with graiiulomatous colitis. Case reportA 36-year-old man was admitted to the University Hospital with an 11-year history o l intermittent bloody diarrhoe and abdominal pain. 8 months earlier, a barium enema elsewhere showed thickened folds and filiform polyposis in the descending colon (Fig. 1). On admission a repeat barium enema (Fig. 2) demonstrütrd multiple large polypoid filling defects extending throughout the left colon. Colonoscopy failed to iiitrodiice the scope beyond the sigmoid because of obstructing lesions. Biopsies were consistent with granulomatoiis colitis.
