Giant Pericardial Cyst: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract: Pericardial cysts are rare lesions. These benign anomalies are located in the middle mediastinum. In this article, we present a 24-year-old man who was referred to the emergency department with dyspnea and persistent cough. In physical exam, no abnormality was found. His past medical history was normal. His trans-thoracic echocardiogram showed an echo-lucent space next to the right atrium at the right cardiophrenic angle. No pericardial effusion was found. The patient underwent surgery. After midsternotomy, a … Show more

“…Pericardial cysts are considerably rare, with an overall incidence of 1 in 100,000 patients, and constitute 6% of all mediastinal masses (3). In line with this statement and to the best of our knowledge, approximately 25 striking cases and literature reviews have been published and cited in conventional citation indices since 2001 (1,4,5). These cysts are usually unilocular, well-delineated spaces encapsulated by a fibrous wall which is lined with mesothelium.…”

“…These medullated fibers respond to stretching, pulling or touching of the pericardium [5]. However, the majority of pericardial cysts are indeed asymptomatic [3]. Due to the ability of pericardial cysts to become infected, systemic symptoms and cardiac complaints should be evaluated actively [6].…”

“…Intensive follow-up program is recommended for asymptomatic patients. Large sized, symptomatic and/or complicated cysts or those carrying suspicion of malignancy may be resected [7][8][9] . This case demonstrates the importance of pericardial cysts and its rare complications such as cardiac compression and shortness of breath.…”
