Giant Myelolipoma in the Spleen

Abstract: Myelolipomas are benign tumors, consisting of hematopoietic cells and mature adipose tissue, which mainly occur within the adrenal gland. Extra-adrenal myelolipomas are rare, and fewer than 60 cases have been reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of intrasplenic myelolipoma in a 42-year-old man with more than 1 month of abdominal pain. Computed tomography scanning revealed a giant, heterogeneous, well-demarcated mass in the spleen. Splenectomy was performed, and an intrasplenic giant mass was comp… Show more

“…As splenic myelolipomas are rare, no consensus exists as to work-up or treatment. Similar to previous case reports [ 3 6 ], our patient's myelolipoma was identified due to abdominal symptoms and was found on CT scan as a round, encapsulated splenic mass. While biopsy of adrenal fatty tumors is commonly employed for diagnosis, the risks of complications related to splenic biopsy are not insignificant.…”

“…Myelolipomas can rarely appear at other sites of the human body, as well, hence the term extra-adrenal myelolipoma. Among numerous locations, myelolipomas have been described in the mediastinum [6], spleen [7], kidney [8], bones [9], thorax [10], nasal cavity [11], ectopic adrenal cortex [12,13] as well as at extradural sites [14] or in the eyes [15].…”

“…The adrenal gland is a predominant location for human myelolipoma, with a handful of reports describing extra-adrenal locations, including the thorax, pelvis and retroperitoneal space [6][7][8][9].…”
