Giant Intradural Mucocele in a Patient with Adult Onset Seizures

Abstract: A rare case of mucopyocele in a patient who presented with epileptic seizures is reported. The computed tomography scan (CT) and the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed an intradural extension of a giant fronto-ethmoidal mucopyocele, eroding the cribriform plate and compressing both frontal lobes. The lesion was removed by craniotomy with elimination of the mass effect and reconstruction of the anterior skull base. An intracranial-intradural mucopyocele is an extremely rare cause of generalized convulsion… Show more

“…The size and shape varies more than any other cavity of the skull in dogs, and depends on breed skull conformation and age [2]. Mucoceles of the paranasal sinuses are chronic, expanding, mucosa-lined lesions characterized by mucous retention, which can be infected, becoming a mucopyocele [3]. They originate from obstructed sinus outfl ow caused by congenital anomalies, trauma, benign or malignant tumors, infection, infl ammation, allergy, and post-surgical complications [4].…”

“…The T1-weighted imaging can vary based on the proportion of mucus, water, and protein contents. [5][6][7] Showing no contrast enhancement helps differentiate a mucocele from other naso-sinusal tumors. CT scans are much better at delineating the extent of the lesion and its relations to the surrounding structures as compared to an MRI.…”
