Abstract: The incidence of giant cell tumor in the Chinese population may be higher than that in Western countries, and it has a male predilection. The results of the present study suggest that extensive curettage provides favorable local control and satisfactory functional outcomes.

“…Indeed, the incidence was slightly higher than previously reported in the US (0.16 per million) 17. Notably, a higher incidence of GCTs in the Chinese population has been reported, ranging from 13.7 to 20 % of all bone tumors (benign and malignant) 16,18. In contrast, the incidence was only 5 % in other large-scale studies 1618.…”

In contrast, the incidence was only 5 % in other large-scale studies 1618. When compared with all GCTs that most frequently occur in persons aged 20–40 years,16 malignant GCTs in the current study were more likely to occur in the elderly, and the incidence was consistent with previous reports that showed no gender predilection 17.…”

“…GCTB is one of the most widely investigated yet perplexing bone tumors. It accounts for 3–8% of primary bone tumors in Western countries; however, it is more common in Asia, where it accounts for approximately 20% of primary bone tumors234567. GCTB is most commonly diagnosed in individuals aged 20–40 years, and >50% of cases occur around the knee23891011.…”

“…Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) accounts for only 3–8% of primary bone tumors in Western populations, compared with 20% in Asian countries1234567. GCTB is particularly likely to occur around the knee (including the distal femur, proximal tibia, proximal fibula, and patella), accounting for >50% of cases23891011.…”

“…Furthermore, a previous study conducted in China reported a 12.4% local recurrence rate in patients with primary GCTB located in an extremity6. However, all the patients collected in these previous reports were from a single institution and followed over a long time interval.…”
