Giant Anisotropic Magnetoresistance due to Purely Orbital Rearrangement in the Quadrupolar Heavy Fermion Superconductor PrV2Al20

Abstract: We report the discovery of giant and anisotropic magnetoresistance due to the orbital rearrangement in a non-magnetic correlated metal. In particular, we measured the magnetoresistance under fields up to 31.4 T in the cubic Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrV2Al20 with a nonmagnetic Γ3 doublet ground state, exhibiting antiferro-quadrupole ordering below 0.7 K. For the [100] direction, we find that the high-field phase appears between 12 T and 25 T, accompanied by a large jump at 12 T in the magnetoresist… Show more

“…The nature of the quadrupolar ordering in these cage compounds has been indirectly examined with a few techniques 40,41 such as ultrasound experiments 4245 (indicating softening of elastic modulus at quadrupolar ordering temperature, ), as well as NMR measurements (where the magnetic field-induced dipole moment is strongly dependent on the underlying quadrupolar phase 46 ). More recently, magnetostriction and thermal expansion strain experiments 47 have also lent themselves as possible probes to study the transitions and the underlying quadrupolar phase.…”

“…However, PrV 2 Al 20 still possesses many unresolved issues among the Pr-based 1-2-20 compounds. It exhibits the non-Fermi liquid 36 , the multiphase diagram [37][38][39] , and in particular, double transitions (DT) at zero magnetic field 40,41 . None of their origins or mechanisms have been well understood, and even the order parameters (OPs) of the symmetry broken phases have not been identified.…”

“…Under magnetic fields, cubic Γ 3 systems show various phase transitions 18,20,39,40,[44][45][46] . Indeed, for PrV 2 Al 20 , various field-induced phases are reported [37][38][39][40] , and the typical scale of magnetic fields is much larger (> 30 T) than the other members. Thus, one must explain these phase diagrams and the DT in a unified way.…”
