Giammusso corporoplasty for the treatment of isolated congenital ventral penile curvature: Results and long‐term follow‐up

Abstract

Penile deviation may be a congenital condition, isolated or associated with urethral plate malformation such as hypospadias, or linked to an acquired abnormality, such as La Peyronie or induration penis disease. Isolated congenital penile curvature (CPC) would appear to be caused by an asymmetric, inharmonious growth of the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa, disproportionate corpora length and increased elasticity of the tunica. The dorsal tunica albuginea ultrastructure appears to have enlarged and fragmented collagen fibres with a chaotic pattern. Disappearance of the physiological striation has also been observed along with transformation into electron dense, fibrous, granular material, which is not present in the ventral tunica albuginea (Darewicz et al., 2001). Ventral curvature is the most frequent deviation among congenital cases, followed by lateral and dorsal curvature. In some patients, the curvature may be associated with penile rotation. CPC incidence ranges between 0.04% and 0.6%, and in 50% of cases, the curvature is ventral (Ozkuvanci et al., 2017).
