GHz bandwidth noise eater hybrid optical amplifier: design guidelines

Abstract: This Letter describes the design of an optical amplifier system optimized to reduce the relative intensity noise (RIN) of the input signal, and discloses its performance in terms of intensity noise reduction and bandwidth, without phase noise degradation. This polarization-maintaining amplifier is composed of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) cascaded with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The EDFA is sized to feed the SOA with a constant power corresponding to the optimal saturation level for nois… Show more

“…In this regime, fluctuations of Stokes η are sharply reduced, and up to 20 dB/Hz reduction compared to the RIN of the input pump laser is experimentally observed. Similar noise fluctuations reduction have been demonstrated in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) used in the saturation regime [31,32]. In the following Subsection, we describe in detail the RIN behavior of individual Stokes order for various operating points to show the rich dynamics of RIN when MBL emission takes place.…”

“…Conversely the EDFA response to amplitude fluctuations must be carefully taken into account due to coherent population oscillations (CPO) effect [30]. Indeed, under saturation, the optical gain varies with the input optical power at low frequency.…”

“…Unfortunately, for general rare earth ion-doped fiber amplifiers, their working frequency is limited to below several hundreds of Hz owing to the long lifetime of the stimulated ions [18]. In this way, the SOA has attracted more intense research in realizing laser noise suppression, thanks to its nanosecondlevel of carrier lifetime, which leads to a reduction bandwidth of up to GHz [19][20][21].…”
