GFAAS Determination of Zinc in Fish Feed and Feces Using Slurry Sampling

Abstract: This paper presents a simple, fast, and sensitive method to determine zinc in samples of feces and fish feed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry through the direct introduction of slurries of the samples into the spectrometer's graphite tube. The procedure is based on the injection of 10 μL of an acidified aqueous solution containing 0.50% w/v of feces or feed and 0.50% v/v HNO 3 into graphite tube. The limits of detection and quantification calculated for 20 readings of the blank of the standard … Show more

“…The limits of detection (LOD) and of quantification (LOQ), which were calculated considering a standard deviation from 20 readings in relation to the blank of the standard solutions and the slope of the analytical curve (LOD=3 σ/slope and LOQ=10 σ/slope) were respectively 0.24 and 0.74 μg L −1 of copper, 0.17 and 0.53 μg L −1 of manganese, and 0.32 and 0.92 μg L −1 of selenium. The life time of the graphite tube was equivalent to 947 firings, which, considering the complexity of the biological matrices, is acceptable for the proposed method when compared with other methods described in the literature (Silva et al 2006;Silva et al 2007;Loureiro et al 2007;Neves et al 2008;Rosa et al 2002;Divrikli et al 2003;Soylak et al 2004;Soylak et al 2005;Saleh et al 2009). …”

“…The development, optimization and application of methods for the determination of total and inorganic nitrogen in various environmental samples are objects of great interest in the analytical community. Total nitrogen was determined in biological samples (Berdeaux et al 2009;Saleh et al 2009;Morandi et al 2009), soil (Barthes et al 2006), sediments (Li et al 2007), water (Oms et al 2003), food (Shama andSingh. 2009;Del Campo et al 2009;Hu et al 2008;Pasquini and Faria, 1987), atmospheric deposition (Karthikeyan et al 2009) and fertilizer (Pasquini and Faria, 1987).…”

“…This technique offers several advantages, such as high sensitivity, detection limit concentrations in ng kg -1 , use of small sample volumes, and determination of a wide variety of trace elements. Considering that the atomizer can act as a chemical reactor, there is a strong possibility of sampling which eliminates the step of prior complete decomposition of the sample [10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
