Getting messier with TIDieR: embracing context and complexity in intervention reporting

Abstract: BackgroundThe Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist and guide was developed by an international team of experts to promote full and accurate description of trial interventions. It is now widely used in health research. The aim of this paper is to describe the experience of using TIDieR outside of trials, in a range of applied health research contexts, and make recommendations on its usefulness in such settings.Main bodyWe used the TIDieR template for intervention description … Show more

“…face to face discussions, handouts, videotapes) can sometimes be more effective than using a single modality, although this varies according to hospital settings and patient characteristics; (iii) falls education interventions are most helpful when their design incorporates theories of health behaviour change and educational principles; (iv) incorporation of an active learning design can better engage some patients. In addition, reporting of interventions should follow established guidelines to ensure transparency and improve the quality of hospital falls research [8,97].…”

“…The TIDieR checklist item was developed to provide a standardised framework for describing interventions to ensure a consistent approach to intervention delivery (Hoffman et al, ). Although the checklist has predominantly been used in RCTs to ensure agreement and conformity to an intervention protocol, it has also been used to highlight where modifications to interventions have occurred (Cotterill et al, ). The checklist was used in this study as a way of systematically categorising commonalities and variations in the delivery of LVs according to an internationally agreed consensus regarding the essential elements that should be included in descriptions of interventions.…”

“…It is known that implementation settings play a crucial role in the effectiveness of interventions, an issue that is at the core of implementation science's efforts to model the impact of context on outcomes [25]. In order to allow for implementation fidelity and replicability, studies of context-aware systems should describe the setting explicitly, as well as provide sufficient details about the intervention and any potential adaptations for it to fit a different setting [26,27].…”
