Get the Most from Your Survey: An Application of Rasch Analysis for Education Leaders

Abstract: High-quality measurement tools are critical to school improvement efforts. Education researchers frequently employ surveys in order to assess a host of variables associated with school improvement. This article asserts that Rasch modeling techniques enhance the quality of a measurement tool because they comprise elements of both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and because Rasch modeling corrects the erroneous conclusions that result from the errors associated with ordinal response scale data.… Show more

“…Using the Rasch measurement model forms anchors of cognitive performance measurement and communicates aspects of student achievement (Bailes & Nandakumar, 2020). The Rasch modelling techniques offer an empirical test of construct validity while still using both item and person scores.…”

“…It uses the same 'logit' unit to measure item difficulty and individual ability for meaningful comparison (Athanasou & Lamprianou, 2009). The Rasch theory is a robust tool for measuring the development of instruments in the field of Education research, especially in aspects of student achievement and school improvement (Bailes & Nandakumar, 2020;Boone & Scantlebury, 2006). Among the advantages of the Rasch model are (i) the survey is conducted more efficiently, (ii) the time taken for administering the survey is shorter, (iii) the survey data is of high quality, and (iv) the model provides a clear interpretation and direction for the revision of the developed instrument (Bailes & Nandakumar, 2020).…”

In this vein, examination of the instrument through pilot studies is important to ensure that the instrument developed is reliable, valid, and has the appropriate quality to be used for the implementation of the actual study.…”

“…Thus, calculations were primarily conducted to confirm the plausibility that the LBI represents a single-factor structure and the amount of variance within the statements due to the factor. This investigation accepted a complementary, or augmenting, approach to item analysis by using the Rasch item analysis model (RM) and factor analysis model (FA) to provide more in-depth analyses (Aryadoust et al, 2020;Bailes & Nandakumar, 2020;Salzberger, 2021). Rasch analyses were calculated for the measure items (Rasch, 1960;Boone, 2016).…”
