Gestures and widgets

Abstract: We describe the design and evaluation of a gestural text editing technique for touchscreen devices. The gestures are drawn on top of the soft keyboard and interpreted as commands for moving the caret, performing selections, and controlling the clipboard. Our implementation is an Android service that can be used in any text editing task on Androidbased devices. We conducted an experiment to compare the gestural editing technique against the widget-based technique available on a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy II wit… Show more

“…However, sometimes users want to apply a style to multiple words. One option would be to combine CommandBoard with other advanced text selection techniques, such as selecting a phrase with a twofinger gesture on top of the keyboard [6]. “…Researchers have also introduced text-selection techniques that differ substantially with the conventional implementations that can be found in commercial products. As an example, Fuccella et al [8,9] proposed the use of discrete gestures executed on the soft keyboard to perform various actions including moving the caret or performing selections. While this approach offers benefits, it supports only word-level selection (sub-word-level are achieved through refinements of the primary selection) and is not compatible with gestural keyboards.…”
