The germination requirements of sexually reproducing plants are regulated by environmental factors such as temperature. Those factors acting at the germination phase are part of the regeneration niche, which is fundamental in the processes that contribute to habitat suitability and geographic distribution. We tested the hypothesis that rarity is associated with regeneration niche in three species of plants in the family Gesneriaceae (tribe Sinningieae), Sinningia rupicola (Mart.) Wiehler, Paliavana sericiflora Benth and Sinningia allagophylla (Mart.) Wiehler, which vary in their distribution and habitat specificity but share a small zone of sympatry in rocky fields south of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The regeneration niche was tested using a seed germination experiment under controlled light conditions at seven fixed temperatures (10-40°C at 5°C intervals). Each of the three species germinated differently at the various temperatures. The species with the smallest geographic range, S. rupicola, also had the most restricted germination: germination peaked at 15°C when relatively few seeds germinated (45%), and even fewer germinated at other temperatures. The regeneration niche was wider in P. sericiflora and wider still in S. allagophylla, with germination greater than 90% between 15-25°C and greater than 80% between 15-30°C, respectively. Our germination results provide qualified support for the hypothesis of correlation of the regeneration niche with geographic distribution of related plant taxa, with important conservation implications for rare and endangered species.

). Foi realizado um estudo palinológico de 21 espécies da família Gesneriaceae reunidas em seis gêneros e três tribos: tribo Beslerieae -Besleria L. (4 spp.); tribo Episcieae -Codonanthe (Mart.) Hanst. (3 spp.), Nematanthus Schrad. (5 spp); tribo Sinningieae -Paliavana Vand. (1 sp.), Sinningia Nees (6 spp.) e Vanhouttea Lem. (2 spp.) ocorrentes no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Objetivou-se caracterizar e ampliar os dados morfológicos da família, em nível genérico ou específi co, contribuindo assim, para uma delimitação mais precisa dos táxons. Os grãos de pólen foram acetolisados, medidos, descritos e ilustrados sob microscopia de luz. Para observar detalhes da superfície e abertura, grãos de pólen não acetolisados foram analisados em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV). Os grãos de pólen das espécies estudadas variaram de pequenos a médios, suboblatos a prolatos; apresentaram cólporos ou colpos e o número de aberturas foi constante para todas as espécies analisadas (3-aperturados). A ornamentação da sexina variou entre escabrada, perfurada, rugulada, microrreticulada e reticulada. Os resultados mostraram que a morfologia polínica é bem defi nida entre as espécies estudadas, variou dentro e entre as tribos e gêneros, podendo ser usada para identifi car os táxons e sustentar o caráter euripalinológico de Gesneriaceae. We aim to characterize and expand the morphological data of the family, at the general or specifi c level, thus contributing to a more precise delimitation of taxa. The pollen grains were acetolysed, measured, described and illustrated using light microscopy. To see details of the surface and opening, non-acetolysed pollen grains were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The pollen grains of the species studied ranged from small to medium, suboblate to prolate; they had colpores or colpes and the number of openings was constant for all species (3-aperture). Ornamentation of the sexine ranged from scabrous to perforated, rugulate, microrreticulate and reticulated. The results showed that pollen morphology is well defi ned for the species studied; it varied within and between tribes and genera, can be used to identify taxa and maintains the eurypalynological character of the family Gesneriaceae.

Activity guided fractionation of Sinningia allagophylla (Mart.) Wiehler ethanolic extract yielded a new benzochromene 8-methoxylapachenol, besides seven known compounds: lapachenol, sitosteryl oleate, sitosteryl linoleate, stigmasteryl oleate, stigmasteryl linoleate, dunniol and tectoquinone. Extract, fractions, and compounds lapachenol, 8-methoxylapachenol, and dunniol were tested in vitro against human cancer cell lines U251 (glioma, CNS), MCF-7 (breast), NCI-ADR/RES (drug-resistant ovarian), 786-0 (kidney), NCI-H460 (lung, no small cells), PC-3 (prostate), OVCAR-3 (ovarian), HT-29 (colon), K562 (leukemia) and against VERO, a normal cell line. INTRODUÇÃOSinningia (Gesneriaceae) é um gênero de plantas ornamentais encontrado nas regiões tropicais do Novo Mundo. Atualmente são reconhecidas 68 espécies, a maioria ocorrendo em território brasileiro.1 Sinningia allagophylla (Mart.) Wiehler é uma erva anual, de tubérculo perene, largamente espalhada no Brasil (rgiões centro-oeste, sul e sudeste), Argentina, Paraguai e Uruguai.2 É conhecida como batata-do-campo ou batata-de-perdiz, sendo empregada na medicina popular como febrífugo, diurético, depurativo, emoliente e tônico. O câncer é uma doença com elevado índice de mortalidade, que atinge anualmente milhões de pessoas ao redor do mundo. Embora tenha havido muito progresso na quimioterapia do câncer, muitos tumores ainda são de difícil remissão, tornando necessária a procura de novos agentes antitumorais. As plantas superiores constituem uma rica fonte de novas substâncias, que podem ser úteis contra neoplasias.8 Como parte de um projeto que visa a procura de substâncias com atividade citotóxica de plantas brasileiras, foi realizado o estudo fitoquímico de S. allagophylla guiado por ensaios de atividade antiproliferativa contra linhagens de células tumorais humanas. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃOO extrato etanólico dos tubérculos de S. allagophylla foi testado contra oito linhagens de células tumorais, apresentando um fraco efeito antiproliferativo in vitro, exceto para a linhagem de células K-562 (leucemia), que teve o seu crescimento totalmente inibido com uma concentração (TGI) de 5,13 µg mL -1 (Tabela 1). Por essa razão, esse extrato foi submetido à partição com hexano, diclorometano, acetato de etila e 1-butanol e as respectivas frações foram avaliadas frente a células tumorais e uma linhagem de células normais (VERO). A maior atividade foi observada na fração em hexano, a qual inibiu o crescimento de seis linhagens de células tumorais, com valores de TGI variando entre 15,5-32,7 µg mL -1 , mas foi inativa frente à linhagem VERO (células normais, TGI > 250 µg mL -1 ).
